“In this long contest for the principles of universal Freedom, a man was brought forth for the occasion, as though sent of God, like another Joshua, to lead our armies, and, when the battle and strife was over, to guide us in the paths of peace. George Washington! the great soldier, the noble Christian, the incorruptible statesman, and the unambitious citizen. Our success may not have been due more to his military genius than to that of others; but his character ennobled our cause and purified our motives in the eyes of the world..”
